At the gym I often end up watching people who are copying professional body building techniques. Now don't get me wrong most times its a great idea to copy the pros, but here's where the people I'm watching go wrong. Professional bodybuilders, the ones competing at least, are already maxed out in muscle mass and the routines you see them perform in the bodybuilding magazines are more for refining their muscle build than to gain muscle mass. In addition the pros have conditioned themselves so much over years of training that when average Joe copies their workout routine they over train, fail to progress, and sometimes give up, thinking they are stuck with poor genetics or some other exotic reason to fail.
The pros started out as average Joe and Jane using time tested muscle workouts to gain size and strength. For most people less is more in the case of muscle gains. What is needed are basic movements, progressively heavy weight and intensity. It shouldn't take all day either 1-2 sets of each exercise are all you need, but your muscles should be exhausted to failure at your last repetition.
If any one thing is key it's forced progression. You must continue to use heavier and heavier weight. Otherwise your body will have no need to adapt and become stronger. Keep a training log to keep track of the amount of weight you lift. Try to increase your load every second or third muscle workout.
